Following last year's work with the students and teachers, in 2010, we kept the same methodology and worked in parallel strands, trying to identify areas for investigation. For the 5 student groups this year, we used the learning from last year's project to think about HOW they would like to learn.... many issues have become evident, and each topic will take shape during the event planned on the 26th and 28th April.
Below is a list of the students and their projects:
Javan, Liam, Philip, Billy: The Buzz Magazine
This magazine is made by children for children: it is run, edited and managed by the 4 students who collect submissions from the whole school. Submissions are in the form of creative essays, fiction, cartoons, and photographs. The first edition will be 16 pages, A5 size, and will be published in colour. The starting point for this magazine was the desire of the students to have one project running through one term that is relevant to school subjects.
Teachers who have essays created by students in their classes worth publishing, it would really help to get them emailed to fhbuzzmagazine@googlemail.com
Max, Aaron, Birame, Tannijan, Ceyhan, Ali, Robert: Tricks & Magic (tentative name)
This groups was fascinated by practical learning, and learning than can happen using the doing, rather than concentrated attention. Throughout our work with them we realised that they have many hidden talents like Origami skills, magic tricks, and card tricks...etc. We have since then pushed them to master their skills in their own time, to practice again and again in order for them to reach 100% success rate. They are at this point experts in their area. Now, they are learning how to convey their specific expertise and teach other people some of their tricks. During the event, they will be performing in a room, where they teach interested people some of their expert knowledge. All skills will be listed on a menu.
Darnel, Kieran W, Kieran R, Mikolaj, Said, Liam P: Respect
The main investigation point for this group was their relationship to teachers and the impressions they give on the first point of contact. Their work has taken a more reflective turn, where they set their own targets and try to work through achieving those targets. This is a group very much concerned about student voice, so it is possibility to have a speaker’s corner in the playground during the event, run by them. (Tentative idea)
Joey, Joe, Xavier, Hamel, Tyler, Luc, James: Expert Experience
The starting point for this group was a desire to find a way to learn from people who have lived a certain experience rather than just read about it... they are looking to invite 5 or 6 experts over the course of the two day event and have them meet students, one on one, for a 20mns question time. Students will book time with the expert they would like to see, and prepare their questions, however the group will provide starter questions for those who are unprepared. Experts we are looking for range in the following fields: Food, Film (actors, directors), art (professional practicing artists), architecture & design, music and sport (preferably football)
If you happen to know any expert in any of those fields who might be interested, please do get in touch with Xavier, Roisin, Samar or Michael.
Andre, Nicholas, Charlie: Board game (still in need of name)
This group is working on a game that will take place in the Atrium, and it will be played by the whole of year 8. This board game rewards choice, and different skill sets, it illustrates the journey through Forest Hill School. This is a small group with a big project, who will most definitely need help in writing question for the board game related to all the subjects studied in school. If you have 30 minutes to spare, you might want to help this group work out some questions for one of the subjects.
