Active reading

Two of the 'Students as Researchers' - Lewis and Jeremy in S7G presented their assessment ideas to the rest of the class - who should walk in at that moment? The headteacher, two Deputies and all the candidates for Deputy interviews - fantastic impression made! I could not be prouder of these two young men who on short notice worked out how they were going to introduce the item, fronted the work to the whole class and took responsibility for walking around and helping some student try out the tool.

What I really like about the tool that they have created is that it focusses on the experience of reading a book and their ability to articulate this to others. It moves beyond the functional recounting of story contents. It potentially acts as a bridge to the how and why of an author's creation. To move beyond functional literacy is the big goal.

Next step is to pilot it properly and let them judge the changes needed...

  1. This is great Carol. I love the phrase you use: "To move beyond functional literacy" - I think you've hit the nail on the head there.
